Welcome to
Chaminuka Healing Site

Spiritual & Physical Health

Zimbabwe has a rich and sophisticated cultural and spiritual history, which we strive to keep alive and relevant to our modern lives. Our culture embodies a respect for tradition and our ancestors and we find wisdom in the practices and rituals that have been passed to us. Prayers, ceremonies, cleansing, spiritual guidance, community - these are all integral to Shona culture.

Linos Wengara Magaya has been fulfilling his calling as a Zimbabwean spiritual healer for decades, sharing his wisdom and experience of both spiritual life and herbal healing.

This site is intended to be a place to connect with all aspects of spiritual culture and find the resources and guidance to help you in your journey.

Culture / Chivanhu

The purpose of this website is to demystify the subject of culture and disseminate the wisdom that lies within our culture. Recent history and modern attitudes mean that much of what was once open and valued has been hidden, and we are happy to help change this.

Zimbabwean spiritual culture is very rich and meaningful. It locates us within an ancestral and cultural timeline stretching from the past into the future. By settling our place and fulfilling our purpose we bring our world into harmony.

The traditions of this culture are not well served by academia, so it falls on certain devoted traditional healers to hold and share knowledge.

There are many rituals, ceremonies, prayers and practises that we follow and teach in our healing work. Some are fundamental and for all to follow, others will be personal to an individual's own circumstance.

We will develop topics in detail on further pages.

Herbs / Makwenzi for medicinal and cleansing use

Herbalism is a central tenet of African spiritual tradition. It has been practiced for thousands of years and we are here to perpetuate the legacy of our ancestors.

The range of herbs and uses for them is vast.

Of course medicinal use is a major area, with most ailments having suitable treatments, from blood pressure, chest problems, abdominal discomfort, sexual health, circulation etc. The benefit of working with plants is that they work as a whole, rather than in isolation. We work on supporting and strengthening the whole immune system.

Herbal cleansing is also an important practice. Certain plants, especially when combined with prayer and ritual, have the ability to help address spiritual disturbances and to purify ourselves, so that we are more open to our spirits and potential.

Cleansing is frequently used and recommended to our followers.

Some medicinal and cleansing herbs are good for general use to promote good physical and spiritual health. Working with clients individually allows us to tailor the herbal practice to their specific needs, often in combination with prayer and ceremony.

Bute

PHOTO-2025-08-05-16-27-28.jpg

Bute rematare  (rebikiro) is snuff that has been cooked and prepared in a specific way according to spiritual process. This would be the preferred snuff for sniffing use. Cooking improves the taste and also mitigates some of the health impact of tobacco. This is our recommended option for all round use. Aside from sniffing, snuff is used in prayers or cleanses. Certain rituals will place a tiny amount of snuff in water to drink. This is why snuff should usually be well cooked.

Bute rehondo is raw uncooked snuff. Some people do take this, but we don't recommend this. It is ideal for some prayers and for cleansing the body. In certain circumstances this might be needed for particular rituals. rehondo means war (in the spiritual world), but the earlier traditional name was Bute remharara (not mararara).

A word of warning. Some healers out there may overuse snuff and give the impression that heavy consumption is a good idea for spiritual practice. Health is always our priority, spiritual health cannot come at the expense of physical health. We believe that consumption of snuff should be done carefully and with awareness of its potential effects.

Accessories for spiritual and cultural life

All cultures and religions have accessories, garments and tools which support their practice. African culture is no exception. Engaging with the items from our history and culture helps maintain a continuity to tradition, helping to awaken a deeper connectedness to the spirit.

Modern, global life encourages us to experiment and try new things, which is not bad, but for spiritual practice we recommend people to connect to their historical artefacts.

In Zimbabwean tradition, some examples are Tsvimbo, the praying stick, made with specific woods. Fabrics (cotton or linen) - particular colours or designs, ie retso, will help the wearer develop a deeper connection to particular aspects of their spiritual life.

Beads are popular for ornamental wearing, but they carry spiritual significance too. Like fabrics, particular colours or patterns may be suggested according to the individual.

There are many other cultural accessories, including various types of snuff containers, feather hats, bracelets, anklets, ceremonial knives (Bakatwa) and many more.
We advise followers if and when something may be useful to support their spiritual growth. Each person will have a slightly different path.
